Childhood skin disorders can be caused by many conditions. They can be categorized into six main causes: allergic reactions, viral, bacterial, fungal, yeast or blocked ducts. Have your doctor or paediatrician diagnose each and provide you with the right treatment option for your child.

  1. Allergic Reaction

    • Some childhood skin conditions are caused by allergic reactions. Eczema, also called atopic dermatitis, appears as dry patches on the skin. The cause is unknown, however it is suspected to be an allergic reaction since this skin disorder often occurs simultaneously with allergies and asthma. Contact dermatitis appears as a simple red area, but can also be an area with swollen, fluid-filled lesions, such as contact dermatitis. Hives (urticaria) appear as blotchy, slightly raised, red patches of skin. They are also often caused by an allergic reaction; usually the allergen has been ingested rather than through topical contact. Allergic reactions to medications, foods and environmental allergens are among the common causes of hives.

    Viral Infection

    • Some childhood skin disorders are caused by a variety of viral infections. Warts appear as raised, thickened bumps on the skin and are caused by the human papillomavirus. Hand-foot-mouth disease (coxsackie) is a skin condition caused by the coxsackie virus. This condition appears as raised bumps that do not itch on the feet, hands and sometimes mouth. Fifth disease, another viral skin disorder, appears after a fever as a rash all over the body. Chicken pox is a viral infection that appears as a red, swollen, itchy rash all over the body. Roseola Infantum (sixth disease) appears as small, red, slightly raised bumps after a respiratory illness with high fever.

    Bacterial Infection

    • Impetigo is a skin infection that causes sores or blister that can break open. It can be cured with anti-biotic creams or internal antibiotics. Scarlet fever appears as a rough, red rash all over the body. It is caused by Streptococcus pyogenes and accompanies strep throat.

    Blocked Ducts

    • Heat rash occurs with high external temperatures, and sweat becomes trapped in blocked ducts. Acne and pimples occur when bacteria, fungus or yeast become trapped in a pore.

    Fungal Infection

    • Ringworm is a fungal infection caused by dermatophytes. It appears as a round, raised red area. Misdiagnosis can lead to additional problems, so it is important to be sure to have a culture done to ensure that the condition is ringworm and provide proper treatment.

    Yeast

    • Candida is a genus of yeast that thrives on the skin. Dermal yeast infections often appear as a red flat rash with clearly marked edges. There may be noticeable spreading with smaller patches surrounding the main rash. Yeast infections are most likely located in warm, moist folds of the skin. Have a doctor determine that the cause of the skin disorder is a yeast infection, to provide proper treatment
